What this tool does

PUB File Viewer opens Microsoft Publisher .pub files in this browser, page by page, and saves them as PDF or PNG.

How to use it

  1. Choose a .pub file, or drop it on the box. The first time, the Publisher reader (about 700 KB) loads from this site.

  2. Wait a moment while the pages are read and drawn. Most newsletters and flyers take under two seconds.

  3. Browse with Previous and Next, or press a page thumbnail. The page count is shown above the page.

  4. Press Download PDF for the whole publication, save the page you see as PNG, or copy all the text.

Common uses

Microsoft Publisher files turn up in places where nobody expects them. A school sends the term newsletter as a .pub, a church office shares the weekly bulletin, a club secretary mails a flyer, or an old project folder is full of brochures made ten years ago. Publisher only ever ran on Windows, so Mac, iPhone, Android and Chromebook users could never open these files. Now Microsoft has retired it: from October 2026 Publisher is no longer part of Microsoft 365, and subscribers cannot open .pub files in it at all. This page opens them in any modern browser.

The file is read by libmspub, the open-source Publisher reader that LibreOffice uses, compiled to WebAssembly so it runs inside your browser tab. It understands files saved by Publisher 98 up to Publisher for Microsoft 365, including the 2003, 2007, 2010, 2013, 2016, 2019 and 2021 releases. Text boxes, linked text that flows from one column to the next, pictures, shapes, lines, tables, bullets, page colours and gradients are drawn on each page at the size set in the file, whether that is A4, Letter, a tri-fold brochure or a postcard.

Download PDF writes a real vector PDF with selectable, searchable text. Send it to someone who does not have Publisher, print it, or keep it as an archive copy now that Publisher is gone. The PNG button saves the page you are looking at as a sharp image at 150 dots per inch, good for WhatsApp, a website or a slide. Publications with more pages can save every page as PNG in one ZIP. Copy text puts all the words in the publication on your clipboard, so you can paste them into Word, Google Docs or an email and reuse an old newsletter without retyping it.

Pictures inside the file can be downloaded too. Pictures (ZIP) saves every embedded photo and logo in its original format, which is handy when the only copy of a logo is inside an old brochure.

Private, and the limits

Newsletters, bulletins and brochures often carry names, phone numbers and addresses. This page does not upload your file. It is read in a separate worker inside this tab, drawn on your screen, and turned into PDF or PNG on your device. TaskNinja never receives it, and it is not sent to an AI model. Close the tab and it is gone from memory.

A few limits are worth knowing. Publisher's own fonts are replaced with open fonts that have the same widths, such as Carlito for Calibri and Liberation Sans for Arial, so a line can break in a slightly different place and decorative fonts look plainer. Pictures stored as WMF or EMF show as grey boxes on the page, though the originals are still in the pictures ZIP. Files from Publisher 1.0 to 95, and some publications built from older templates, cannot be read and show a clear message instead of a blank page. A .pub file that is really something else, such as a Word file renamed, is refused.

FAQ

How do I open a .pub file without Publisher?
Choose the file on this page. It opens in your browser on Windows, Mac, Linux, Android or iPhone, with nothing to install.
Is my Publisher file uploaded?
No. It is read and drawn inside your browser tab. TaskNinja does not receive or store the file.
Can I still open .pub files after Publisher was retired?
Yes. Microsoft stopped including Publisher in Microsoft 365 in October 2026, but the files still open here and can be saved as PDF.
Which Publisher versions are supported?
Publisher 98 to Publisher for Microsoft 365. Files from Publisher 1.0 to 95 are not supported.
Can I edit the publication?
No. This is a viewer and converter. Copy the text into Word or Google Docs if you need to change the words.
Why does the text wrap a little differently from Publisher?
Publisher's fonts are not free to share, so open fonts with matching widths are used. Spacing is close, but not identical.
Is it free?
Yes. There is no sign-up, no daily limit, and no watermark on the PDF or PNG.
