What this tool does

EViews Workfile Viewer opens a .wf1 file in this browser and shows every page and series with its dates and labels, ready to save as Excel or CSV.

How to use it

  1. Choose a .wf1 file, or drop it on the box. It is read in your browser, not uploaded.

  2. The first page opens straight away with its frequency, date range and series. Pick another page with the page buttons.

  3. Check the Series list for each series' label, missing values (NA) and a quick summary such as the mean, minimum and maximum.

  4. Download Excel for a workbook with a sheet per page, Download CSV for the page you are looking at, or Copy table to paste into Excel or Google Sheets.

Common uses

EViews is the econometrics program from S&P Global that economists, central banks, finance teams and economics courses use for time series, forecasting and regression work. Its native file is the .wf1 workfile, which holds one or more pages of series plus equations, graphs and tables. Inside a team that owns EViews that works well. Everywhere else it is a dead end: a textbook's data sets come as .wf1, a lecturer shares the class data, a research paper's replication files are EViews workfiles, or a colleague who left kept everything in EViews. EViews is a paid Windows program, and Excel, Google Sheets, LibreOffice, R and Python cannot open a .wf1 file on their own. This page reads it in a moment on any computer or phone.

The viewer understands how a workfile is built. Each page keeps its own frequency, so annual, semi-annual, quarterly, monthly, weekly and daily pages (5, 6 or 7 day weeks) get proper observation labels such as 1990, 1990Q2, 1990M11 or 2012-01-03. Undated pages are numbered, dated pages that use a date series show those dates, and panel pages show each cross section next to its period, such as Australia 1971. Numeric series keep full double precision. Alpha (text) series come out as text. NA values are shown as a dot and left empty in exports.

Under the table, the Series list gives every series with its display name, description and remarks from the EViews label view, how many values and NAs it has, and its mean, standard deviation, minimum and maximum. Other objects saved in the workfile, such as equations, graphs, tables, models, matrices, scalars and groups, are listed by name and type, so you can see what else the file holds. Copy summary puts the overview on the clipboard for an email or notes.

Download Excel builds an .xlsx with one sheet per page, the observation labels in the first column and the header row frozen, plus a Series sheet with labels and statistics and an About sheet. Download CSV writes the page you are viewing as UTF-8 with every observation, ready for R, Python, Stata, gretl or a database. The reader runs in a background worker, so a workfile of tens of megabytes opens in a second or two and the page never freezes.

Private, and the limits

The .wf1 file never leaves your device. It is read by code running in this browser tab, and the Excel and CSV files are made on your computer too. There is no upload, no account and no AI model, so client data, forecasts and unpublished research stay private. Closing the tab clears everything from memory.

This is a viewer and converter, not a copy of EViews. Equations, graphs, tables, models and spools are listed by name, but they are not run or drawn; only EViews does that. The newer .wf2 format and series that EViews saved in a compressed form get a clear message instead of wrong numbers.

FAQ

Can I open a WF1 file without EViews?
Yes. Choose the .wf1 file on this page and the workfile opens in Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari, on Windows, Mac, Linux, a Chromebook or a phone.
Is my workfile uploaded anywhere?
No. The workfile is read inside your browser. TaskNinja never receives the file, and nothing is stored after you close the tab.
Can Excel open a .wf1 file?
No. Excel has no reader for EViews workfiles. Open the file here and press Download Excel to get an .xlsx with a sheet for every page and the dates in the first column.
Which EViews versions are supported?
Classic .wf1 workfiles from older and current EViews versions, including multi-page, dated, undated and panel workfiles. The newer .wf2 format is not read yet; in EViews, use Save As and pick the .wf1 type.
Are equations and graphs shown?
They are listed by name and type, such as equation, graph or table. Their contents are not drawn or estimated, because only EViews runs them. Every series, including the residuals EViews saved, is shown with its values.
Does it work on iPhone and Android?
Yes. Pick the file from Files, Drive or Downloads. Wide pages show a few series at a time with Next series, so there is no sideways scrolling.
