What this tool does

SpvOpen shows an SPSS output file in this browser, with every table, chart and note in the order SPSS printed them, and saves the tables to Excel or CSV.

How to use it

  1. Choose an .spv file, or drop it on the box. It is read in your browser and never uploaded.

  2. The first tables appear in a moment. Bigger files keep filling in below while you read.

  3. Use the contents list to jump to a section, such as Regression or Crosstabs. Tick Show hidden items to see Notes tables and other items hidden in SPSS.

  4. Press Download Excel for one sheet per table, All tables (CSV) or Text (.txt) for the whole output, or the buttons under a single table or chart.

Common uses

An .spv file is what the IBM SPSS Statistics Viewer saves: the output window with every pivot table, chart, note and log that a run of analyses produced. Students get them back from a statistician, supervisors receive them with a thesis draft, and clients are sent them by survey and research firms. The trouble is that only SPSS, which needs a paid licence, opens them. IBM's free Smartreader is a Windows and Mac install, and most free online converters ask you to upload the file to their server, which is not great for unpublished data or a patient study.

This page reads the file itself. An .spv is a ZIP archive with an outline of the output plus one binary member per table. SpvOpen walks the outline and rebuilds each pivot table from its stored values, labels, number formats, footnotes and layers, so a Descriptive Statistics, Crosstabs, ANOVA or Coefficients table shows the same numbers and decimals SPSS printed. Layered tables get a layer picker. Charts saved by SPSS (bar, clustered and stacked bars, pie, histogram with a normal curve, scatter, line, box plot, P-P and Q-Q plots) are redrawn from their saved data, and pictures are shown as saved.

Excel is the main reason people want the file opened. Download Excel builds a workbook with a Contents sheet and one sheet per table, keeping merged headings, every layer and the numbers as real numbers, so you can format them for a report or paste them into a thesis. All tables (CSV) puts every table into one file, and Text gives a readable copy of the whole output, headings and notes included.

Speed was a goal from the start. The reader is a small script of about 60 KB (about 23 KB compressed) that downloads while the page is idle, and the file is read in a background worker, so the page never freezes. A typical output file shows its first tables in well under a second. Very large outputs show the first screen first and fill in the rest with a progress bar, drawing 40 items at a time so the page stays quick.

Private, and the limits

Your output never leaves your device. The file is read by code running in this tab, and the Excel, CSV and text files are made on your computer too. There is no upload, no account and no AI model, so survey answers, patient data and unpublished results stay private. Closing the tab clears everything. Tables are shown as plain text and charts as pictures, so nothing in the file can run code.

This is a viewer, not SPSS. Tables keep their numbers and labels but not their colours or fonts, and charts are redrawn in black and white. Tables saved by SPSS 16 to 22 in the older format, and interactive Model Viewer items, are listed by name but not drawn. Old .spo files from SPSS 15 and earlier use a different format and do not open. Password protected .spv files need SPSS. IBM and SPSS are trademarks of IBM Corp. TaskNinja is not connected to IBM.

FAQ

How do I open an .spv file without SPSS?
Choose the .spv file on this page. The output opens in Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari on any computer, Chromebook or phone, with nothing to install and no licence.
Is my .spv file uploaded anywhere?
No. The output is read by code in this tab, so your data never reaches TaskNinja or any server. Close the tab and it is gone.
Which SPSS versions are supported?
Output saved by SPSS Statistics 23 and later, including versions 29, 30 and 31, and by GNU PSPP. Older tables from SPSS 16 to 22 are listed by name only.
Can I convert SPV to Excel?
Yes. Download Excel gives a workbook with one sheet per table and a Contents sheet, with merged headings and numbers kept as numbers.
Can I convert SPV to PDF?
Open the file here and use your browser's Print, Save as PDF. Or download the text or Excel version and print that.
Why is a table missing?
SPSS hides some items, such as the Notes table. Tick Show hidden items to see them. Tables in the old SPSS 16 to 22 format are listed but not drawn.
