What this tool does

Convert Unicode Hindi (Mangal, Google Indic, phone keyboards) to Kruti Dev 010 keys for Word, typing tests and office templates. Free, and nothing is uploaded.

How to use it

  1. Unicode to Kruti Dev is already picked on this page. Paste your Hindi in the box, for example भारत एक महान देश है।

  2. Press Convert. The Kruti Dev keys appear under the box, such as Hkkjr ,d egku ns'k gSA, and update while you edit.

  3. Press Copy text, paste into Microsoft Word, select it and set the font to Kruti Dev 010. The Hindi appears.

  4. Check the note under the result. Any character that has no Kruti Dev key, and any English letters, are listed so you can fix them by hand.

Common uses

Many state offices, courts, typing tests and printing presses still work in Kruti Dev 010, while most new Hindi is typed in Unicode on phones and laptops. Retyping a page in the Remington layout takes an hour; converting takes a second. Typists also use it to check their key strokes: paste a Unicode word and see exactly which keys make it in Kruti Dev.

Unicode stores Hindi in reading order and the font arranges the shapes; Kruti Dev stores the shapes in drawing order. So the converter does the reordering in reverse. The short i matra moves in front of its whole consonant cluster (स्थिति becomes fLFkfr), the reph moves after the letter and its matra (कीर्ति becomes dhfrZ, कार्यक्रम becomes dk;ZØe), half letters use the Kruti Dev half shapes, and common conjuncts use their own keys: क्ष as {k, त्र as =, ज्ञ as K, श्र as J, द्ध as ), द्य as |, क्र as Ø and प्र as ç. रु and रू use # and : just as typists type them.

Some Unicode cannot be written in Kruti Dev. English letters stay English and need an English font in Word. Symbols such as % + * # @ & and _ are Hindi shapes in Kruti Dev, so they are left as they are and listed. A colon becomes the visarga key, which looks the same in the font. Nukta letters such as क़, ज़ and फ़ get the nukta key, so nothing is lost when you convert back. To check any result, press Convert this back; the text should come back exactly as you pasted it.

Private, and the limits

The Hindi you paste is converted inside this browser tab and is never uploaded, stored or shared. There is no account and no limit on length. We only count that the button was pressed, never the text.

Kruti Dev text only looks right in the Kruti Dev 010 font, which TaskNinja does not supply; it is installed on most office computers that need it. If you only need Hindi that works everywhere, keep it in Unicode instead.
