What this tool does

Unit Converter turns one amount into another unit in your browser, including bigha, guntha, cent, ground, marla and kanal.

How to use it

  1. Choose Length, Area, Weight, Volume or Temperature. Area opens first, because that is where the Indian land units sit.

  2. Type the amount. Pick a from unit and a to unit, or tap a chip such as Acre to Bigha (UP) or Guntha to Sq ft. Use Swap units if they are the wrong way round.

  3. Tap Convert. The large figure is the result. When the unit is a state measure, a short note says which definition was used.

  4. Copy the summary, or download a CSV of the amount, the units, the result and the factor note.

Common uses

A Lucknow deed may say bigha, a Maharashtra 7/12 may say guntha, and a Chennai ad may say ground. This page converts one amount and names the definition, so an eastern UP bigha is not treated as an Assam bigha.

International length and mass follow NIST Special Publication 811. The foot is 0.3048 metres exactly, so an acre of 43,560 square feet is 4,046.8564224 square metres. A hectare is 10,000 square metres. The exact avoirdupois pound is 0.45359237 kilograms. NIST prints a rounded 0.4535924. This page keeps the exact pound. A US gallon is 231 cubic inches, 3.785411784 litres. An imperial gallon is 4.54609 litres under the UK Weights and Measures Act 1985.

Kelvin is Celsius plus 273.15. Fahrenheit is Celsius times 9/5, plus 32. So 0 °C is 32 °F, and minus 40 matches on both scales. Anything below 0 K is rejected, as is a negative length, area, weight or volume. A decimal that ends within 10 places is shown in full. Otherwise it is rounded to 6 places, so 1 hectare reads as 2.471054 acres.

The Maharashtra survey guntha, in the Poona District Gazetteer, is 121 square yards and 40 guntha make an acre, so 1,089 square feet. The state land-records page also prints 100 square metres beside that figure. That is about 1.2 percent smaller, so this tool uses 1,089 square feet. Cent and decimal are each 1/100 acre, 435.6 square feet. Cent is the southern name on the Tamil Nadu survey table. Decimal is the Bihar and Bengal name in the Bihar revenue glossary. A ground on the Tamil Nadu table is 2,400 square feet. The same table also says 5.5 cent, which is 2,395.8 square feet, and the 2,400 square foot line is the one used here.

There is no single bigha. Eastern Uttar Pradesh, Lucknow and the Patna standard are 27,225 square feet, 0.625 acre. The Bihar glossary says the Patna katha is about 1,361 square feet and that districts differ, so the unit is labelled Patna, not all of Bihar. Western Uttar Pradesh is often 5 biswa, 6,806.25 square feet. Rajasthan pucca is 165 by 165 feet, 27,225 square feet, and the kachha bigha is 17,424 square feet, 0.4 acre. Assam is 14,400 square feet, five katha of 2,880. West Bengal is 14,400 square feet, twenty katha of 720, or 40/121 acre. In Punjab and Haryana a marla is 272.25 square feet, a kanal is 20 marla, and a bigha is 4 kanal, half an acre. A different city marla is left out.

Private, and the limits

The amount and the units you pick stay in this browser tab. They are not sent to TaskNinja or written into analytics. Counted events are anonymous, such as a download. The number you typed is not one of them.

The result is arithmetic from the factors on this page, not a survey of a plot. A patta or a registered deed controls a real deal. If a district uses a bigha that is not listed, use the square feet or hectares in the record.

FAQ

How many square feet are in a bigha?
It depends which bigha. Eastern UP and Patna are 27,225 square feet. Western UP is often 6,806.25. Rajasthan kachha is 17,424. Assam and West Bengal are 14,400. Punjab and Haryana are 21,780. Pick the named unit and read the note.
How many guntha are in one acre?
Forty. One guntha is 1,089 square feet, or 121 square yards. This page does not treat a guntha as 100 square metres.
Are cent and decimal the same?
Yes, as area. Both are one hundredth of an acre, 435.6 square feet. Cent is the usual word in the south, and decimal is the usual word in Bihar and Bengal records. The labels stay separate so the note matches the record you are reading.
How big is a ground in Chennai?
Tamil Nadu Survey and Settlement prints 2,400 square feet for one ground. The same table also equates a ground with 5.5 cent, which is 4.2 square feet less. The converter follows 2,400 square feet.
What marla and kanal does this use?
The Punjab and Haryana revenue sizes: one marla is 272.25 square feet, one kanal is 20 marla, and eight kanal make one acre. A different city marla is not included.
Is the number I type uploaded?
No. Conversion runs in your browser. The amount, the units and the result stay on your device.
