What this tool does

Krutidev to Unicode turns Hindi typed in the Kruti Dev 010 font into real Unicode Hindi that works in any app, and turns Unicode Hindi back into Kruti Dev keys when an office still asks for Kruti Dev.

How to use it

  1. Pick Kruti Dev to Unicode (the default) or Unicode to Kruti Dev at the top of the tool.

  2. Paste your text in the box. Kruti Dev text pasted outside Word looks like Hkkjr ,d egku ns'k gSA, which is normal. To convert a whole Word file, choose Open a Word file and pick the .docx.

  3. Press Convert. The Hindi appears under the box and keeps updating while you edit the text above.

  4. Press Copy text to paste it into Word, Google Docs, email, WhatsApp or a portal, or download a .txt file. For a Word file, press Download .docx.

  5. Read names, figures and dates once against the original before you send it, as you would with any retyped text.

Common uses

Kruti Dev is a font, not a language setting. Each Hindi shape sits on an English key, so भारत is stored as the letters Hkkjr. On a computer with the font it looks like Hindi; anywhere else, or after copy and paste, it turns into those letters. Search, spell check, mobile phones, websites and most government portals expect Unicode Hindi, the same text you get from Google Indic or a phone keyboard. Converting fixes this for good: the result shows correctly in any Unicode font such as Mangal, Nirmala UI or Noto Sans Devanagari.

A simple letter-for-letter swap gets Hindi wrong, because Kruti Dev stores some shapes in the order they are drawn, not the order they are read. The short i matra (ि) is typed before its consonant (f then the letter), and the reph (र् on top) is typed after the letter and its matras (Z at the end). The converter moves them to Unicode order and carries them across half letters, so fLFkfr becomes स्थिति, dhfrZ becomes कीर्ति, and dk;ksaZ becomes कार्यों. It also handles nukta (cM+k to बड़ा, Q+kby to फ़ाइल), rakar (xzkeh.k to ग्रामीण, jk"Vªh; to राष्ट्रीय), conjuncts such as क्ष, त्र, ज्ञ, श्र, द्ध and द्व, Hindi digits, the danda (A to ।) and the Kruti Dev keys for brackets and quotes.

Word files are where most Kruti Dev text lives. Open a .docx and only the text set in a Kruti Dev font changes; English in Arial or Times, tables, pictures, headers, footers, bold and sizes stay as they are. Words that Word split into several pieces are joined before converting, so the ि still lands on the right letter. The Hindi gets Mangal by default, or Nirmala UI or Noto Sans Devanagari if you prefer, and its size and bold carry over. If the file used Kruti Dev under another font name, you can convert all text instead.

The other direction helps when a typing test, court or office template still needs Kruti Dev 010. Paste Unicode Hindi, press Convert, then paste the keys into Word and set the font to Kruti Dev 010. Hindi with no Kruti Dev key, and English letters, are listed so you know what to fix. Use Convert this back to check a result either way.

Private, and the limits

Your text and Word files are converted by code running in this browser tab. Nothing is uploaded, saved or logged, and there is no sign-up. We only count anonymous events such as the Convert button being pressed, never the words.

What it cannot do: tell English apart from Kruti Dev inside pasted plain text (both are English letters), so mixed text is best converted from the .docx, where fonts tell them apart. Nukta letters typed without the nukta key stay without a nukta. It is built for Kruti Dev 010; other legacy fonts such as Chanakya or DevLys use different keys and need their own converter. Old .doc files must be saved as .docx in Word first.

FAQ

Is Kruti Dev to Mangal the same as Kruti Dev to Unicode?
Yes. Mangal is a Unicode Hindi font that comes with Windows. Converting to Unicode and showing the text in Mangal is exactly what offices mean by Kruti Dev to Mangal.
Why does my Kruti Dev text show as English letters?
Because Kruti Dev stores Hindi on English keys. Without the font, or after pasting into another app, you see the keys, like Hkkjr for भारत. Converting to Unicode makes the Hindi permanent.
Will the converted Hindi work on a phone or a government portal?
Yes. Unicode Hindi is the standard used by Android, iPhone, websites and portals, so the text reads the same everywhere without any special font.
Does it keep tables and formatting in Word?
Yes, when you open the .docx. Only Kruti Dev text changes. Pasted text carries no formatting, so use the Word file for tables and layout.
Which Kruti Dev fonts does it support?
Kruti Dev 010, the keyboard used in most offices and typing tests. Kruti Dev styles that share its keys convert the same way. Chanakya and DevLys use different keys.
How accurate is it?
We test it on more than 100 real typed samples with known Unicode, including stiff cases for the short i, reph, half letters and nukta. Please still proofread names and numbers.
