What this tool does

STAAD File Viewer opens a STAAD.Pro .std model in this browser, draws the frame in 3D, and lists its sections, supports and load cases.

How to use it

  1. Choose a .std file, or drop it on the box. It is read in your browser, not uploaded.

  2. The model opens in 3D, fitted to the screen. Drag to turn it, scroll or pinch to zoom, or switch to Front, Side or Plan.

  3. Click a member or a joint to read its number, length, section, material and support.

  4. Tap a row in the Sections table to show only the members with that section, with their total length and concrete volume.

  5. Download a PNG of the view, a PDF report, the members or joints as CSV for Excel, or copy a short summary.

Common uses

STAAD.Pro, from Bentley Systems, is one of the most used structural analysis programs in India and many other countries. Consultants design RCC buildings, steel sheds, towers, pipe racks and bridges in it, and the model is saved as a .std file: a plain-text list of commands with the joints, members, properties, supports and loads. These files travel a lot. A structural consultant sends one to the architect, the client's checking engineer, the contractor's planning team, a student or a teacher. Most of those people do not have a STAAD.Pro licence, and the program only runs on Windows. Opening the file in Notepad shows numbers, not a building. This page draws the model so you can see what was designed.

The viewer reads the STAAD command language the same way STAAD.Pro does. It follows the joint and member generation rules from Bentley's technical reference, including REPEAT, REPEAT ALL, linear generation and cylindrical coordinates, so a ten storey frame written in a few lines still opens with every joint and member in place. Units come from the UNIT commands in the file, such as metres, millimetres, feet or inches, and SET Z UP models are turned the right way up. Plates are drawn as grey faces and solids as outlines under the frame members.

Under the model, the Sections table groups every member by its property: Indian, American or European table sections such as ISMB 300 or W12X26, and prismatic sections such as a 450 x 300 RCC column. For each section you get the number of members, their total length and, for prismatic sections, the concrete volume in cubic metres. That makes a quick take-off for a rough estimate or a check of the drawings. Columns, beams and inclined members are counted separately, supports are listed by type, and the load cases and combinations are listed by number and title.

Download PDF report gives an A4 report with a picture of the view you set up, the model facts, the section take-off, member types, supports and load cases, which is handy for a design review meeting or a site file. The members CSV has one row per member with its joints, length, type, section, material and groups, and opens straight in Excel or Google Sheets. The joints CSV has every joint with its coordinates and support.

Private, and the limits

The .std file does not leave your device. It is read and drawn by code running in this browser tab, and there is no upload, no account and no AI model involved. Structural models often belong to a client and carry project names, so keeping them on your computer matters. Close the tab and the model is gone from memory.

This is a viewer, not an analysis program. A .std file holds the model and the loads, not the results, so you will not see bending moments, deflections or design ratios here, and nothing is calculated beyond lengths, areas and volumes. Member offsets, releases and beta angles are not drawn. Table sections are shown by name; their areas are not looked up. The STAAD.Pro output report (.anl) and other programs' files such as ETABS .e2k are not .std files, and the page tells you so if you pick one. Very large models open too, but they need a computer with enough memory.

FAQ

Can I open a STAAD file without STAAD.Pro?
Yes. Choose the .std file on this page and the model opens in 3D in Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari, on Windows, Mac, Linux or a phone. Nothing is installed.
Is my STAAD model uploaded?
No. The file is read and drawn in your browser. TaskNinja never receives it.
Which STAAD files open here?
STAAD.Pro input files with the .std extension, from older STAAD versions to STAAD.Pro CONNECT Edition and 2026. Space, plane, truss and floor structures all open.
Does it show analysis results or design ratios?
No. Results are not stored in the .std file. You see the model as written: geometry, sections, materials, supports, load cases and combinations.
Can I export STAAD members to Excel?
Yes. Download members CSV gives one row per member with joints, length, type, section and material. Download joints CSV gives every joint with X, Y, Z and its support.
Does it work for Indian code models?
Yes. Indian table sections such as ISMB and ISA show by name, and the design code lines in the file, such as IS 456 or IS 800, are listed under Model info.
Is it free?
Yes. There is no sign-up, no file limit and no watermark on the PNG, PDF or CSV.
