What this tool does

Percentage Calculator answers the six percentage questions people ask most: X% of a number, what percent one number is of another, the percentage increase or decrease, a number with a percentage added or taken off, the value before a percentage, and the percentage of marks across subjects.

How to use it

  1. Pick what you want to work out: X% of Y, X is what % of Y, % change, Add or take off %, Value before % or Marks %.

  2. Type the two numbers. Commas are fine, so 2,400, 25,000 and 1,00,000 all work, and you can leave in a % or ₹ sign.

  3. For Add or take off % and Value before %, choose whether the percentage was added, like GST, or taken off, like a discount.

  4. Tap Calculate percentage. The answer appears in large type with a sentence and the working, line by line.

  5. Change Decimal places if you need more or fewer digits, then Copy summary or Download CSV for a sheet.

Common uses

A percentage is a number out of 100, so 15% means 15 for every 100. To find X% of a number, divide X by 100 and multiply by the number: 15% of 2,400 is 15 ÷ 100 × 2,400 = 360. To find what percent one number is of another, divide the part by the whole and multiply by 100: 450 out of 500 is 90%. These are the two formulas NCERT teaches in Class 8 under Comparing Quantities, and every other mode on this page is built on them.

Percentage change always divides by the old value. A salary that goes from ₹25,000 to ₹30,000 rises by ₹5,000, and 5,000 ÷ 25,000 × 100 is a 20% increase. A price that falls from 100 to 80 is a 20% decrease, but going back up from 80 to 100 is a 25% increase, because the base is now 80. The page shows a plus sign for a rise, a minus sign for a fall and the plain difference as well.

Add or take off % gives the new value and the amount. Add 18% GST to ₹1,000 and you get ₹1,180, of which ₹180 is the tax. Take 30% off a ₹2,499 shirt and you pay ₹1,749.30, saving ₹749.70. A rise and a fall of the same percentage do not cancel out: 100 plus 20% is 120, and 120 minus 20% is 96.

Value before % works backwards, which is where most people go wrong. If a bill of ₹1,180 includes 18% GST, the price before tax is 1,180 ÷ 1.18 = ₹1,000, not 1,180 minus 18%. If a sale price of ₹1,749.30 is after 30% off, the original price was 1,749.30 ÷ 0.70 = ₹2,499. The working line shows the divisor so you can check it on a phone calculator.

Every figure is worked out with exact fractions, not floating point numbers, so you never see answers like 0.30000000000000004. Results are rounded only at the end, to the decimal places you pick, and the sentence says about when a figure had to be rounded, such as 1 is about 33.33% of 3.

Private, and the limits

The numbers you type stay in your browser tab. TaskNinja does not receive, store or log them, there is no sign-in, and the page keeps working if your connection drops after it loads. We only count anonymous events, such as the calculator being used, never your numbers or results.

For an exam form or an admission, follow the rule your board, university or employer gives. Some ask for all subjects, some for the best five and some for a set list. Use the CSV to keep a copy of how you got the figure.

FAQ

How do I calculate a percentage of a number?
Divide the percentage by 100 and multiply by the number. 15% of 2,400 is 0.15 × 2,400 = 360. Choose X% of Y and type 15 and 2,400.
How do I calculate percentage increase?
Take the old value from the new value, divide by the old value and multiply by 100. From 80 to 100 is 20 ÷ 80 × 100 = 25% increase.
How do I remove 18% GST from a price?
Divide the price by 1.18. A ₹1,180 bill is ₹1,000 before GST and ₹180 of tax. Choose Value before %, type 1,180 and 18, and pick It was added.
Why is 20% off and then 20% on not the same price?
Because the second 20% is taken of a different number. 100 minus 20% is 80, and 80 plus 20% is 96.
Can I calculate percentage of marks here?
Yes. Choose Marks %, type your total marks out of the maximum, or add a row for each subject. You can also count only the best five.
