What this tool does

Work out percentage of marks for one exam or many subjects with different maximum marks. Count all subjects or the best 5 for CBSE and state boards. In browser.

How to use it

  1. Marks % is already selected. For a single total, type the marks you scored and the maximum marks, such as 432 and 500.

  2. For a mark sheet, tap Add a subject for each paper and type the subject name, the marks scored and the maximum marks. Names are optional.

  3. If you have more than five subjects and the form asks for the best five, set Count to Best 5. The lowest subjects are struck through.

  4. Tap Calculate percentage. The overall percentage appears first, with the total, the working and a table of each subject's percentage.

  5. Copy summary to paste into a form or message, or Download CSV to open the mark sheet in Excel or Google Sheets.

Common uses

Percentage of marks is total marks scored divided by total maximum marks, multiplied by 100. Six papers out of 100 with 95, 91, 88, 84, 79 and 70 add up to 507 out of 600, which is 84.5%. One total works the same way: 432 out of 500 is 86.4%.

When papers have different maximum marks, add the marks first and divide once. Do not average the subject percentages. A theory paper of 78 out of 80, a practical of 25 out of 30 and a project of 40 out of 50 make 143 out of 160, which is 89.38%. Averaging the three subject percentages would give a different answer, because it treats a 30-mark practical as if it counted as much as an 80-mark paper.

CBSE does not declare an overall percentage. Its examination bye-laws say no overall division, distinction or aggregate is awarded, and its exam controller has said that if a student offered more than five subjects, the admitting institution or employer decides which best five to use and works out any percentage itself. Many colleges ask for a best of four or best of five figure, so check the exact rule in the admission notice.

Best of five picks the five subjects with the highest percentage, not the highest raw marks, so a subject marked out of 50 is compared fairly with one out of 100. In the six-paper example, best five drops the 70 and gives 437 out of 500, which is 87.4%. Some colleges insist that English or a language must be one of the five. If so, keep it in by removing a different subject instead of using Best 5.

State boards and universities follow the same arithmetic, but some round differently or count grace marks. The calculator shows two decimal places by default and lets you choose from 0 to 6, and it says about whenever the figure had to be rounded, so you can match the format a form asks for.

Private, and the limits

Your marks never leave your device. TaskNinja does not upload, save or log them, and there is no account. Only anonymous counts, such as the calculator being used, are recorded.

This is a calculator, not an official result. For an admission or a job form, use the marks on your mark sheet and the counting rule the institution gives.

How do I calculate best of 5 percentage?
Pick the five subjects with the highest percentage, add their marks and divide by their maximum marks. Set Count to Best 5 and the page does it for you.
Does CBSE give an overall percentage?
No. CBSE shows marks for each subject and does not declare a percentage or aggregate. The college or employer works it out, often from the best five subjects.
