What this tool does

GraffleOpen draws an OmniGraffle .graffle file in this browser, canvas by canvas, so you can read a diagram from a Mac user on any computer or phone, with nothing to install and no upload.

How to use it

  1. Choose a .graffle file, or drop it on the box. A .graffle that shows as a folder is a package: zip it first and open the .zip.

  2. The first canvas appears straight away. Use the canvas list or the arrows to move between canvases, and plus or minus to zoom in and drag around.

  3. Click any shape to read its full text, notes and custom data, and copy the text if you need it.

  4. Download every canvas as one PDF, the current canvas as PNG or SVG, or all the text as a CSV spreadsheet.

Common uses

OmniGraffle is the diagram app many Mac and iPad users reach for when Visio is not around: network maps, wireframes, org charts, floor plans, UML and process flows. It only runs on Apple devices and costs money, so when a colleague, client or lecturer sends a .graffle file to someone on Windows, Linux, a Chromebook or an Android phone, the usual answer is to ask them to export a PDF and wait. Older online converters upload the file to their server and often cap the size at a few megabytes.

This page reads the file itself. A .graffle file holds an XML property list, Apple's standard settings format, either gzipped (OmniGraffle 5 to 7.15) or inside a zip (7.16 and later). The list describes every canvas, layer, shape, line and text box with its position and style. GraffleOpen unpacks it with a small decompressor, reads the list, and redraws each canvas as a vector picture: rectangles, rounded boxes, circles, diamonds, clouds and other stencil shapes, curved and elbow lines with arrowheads, fills, gradients and rich text with its font, size, colour and alignment. PNG and JPEG pictures stored in the file are placed on the canvas, and package files (the folder kind) open once zipped.

Diagrams carry more than what is drawn. Shapes often hold notes, a link or key value data such as an IP address, owner or cost, which OmniGraffle only shows in its inspector. Click a shape here to see all of it, or download the CSV to get one row per shape with the canvas, layer, text, notes and data, ready to filter in Excel or Google Sheets. Hidden layers stay hidden, as in OmniGraffle, and the page tells you which ones were left out.

Speed matters, because a viewer you wait for is a viewer you close. The reader is about 16 KB compressed and loads in the background while this page is idle. It runs in a worker, so the page never freezes, and it draws the first canvas before the rest. A typical diagram shows in well under a second, and a 20 MB file with hundreds of canvases shows progress as each one is drawn.

Private, and the limits

Your drawing stays on your device. The file is read by code running in this tab, and the PDF, PNG, SVG and CSV are made on your computer too. Nothing is uploaded, there is no account, and the file is gone when you close the page, which matters for network maps and floor plans that should not leave the company.

Some things are drawn more simply than in OmniGraffle: shadows are left out, fonts missing from your device are swapped for a close match, and TIFF or PDF pictures inside a package show as a grey box. Binary files from very old versions cannot be read yet. OmniGraffle is a trademark of The Omni Group; TaskNinja is not affiliated with The Omni Group.

FAQ

How do I open a .graffle file on Windows?
Choose the file on this page in Chrome, Edge or Firefox. The diagram is drawn in the browser, so there is nothing to install and OmniGraffle is not needed.
Is my OmniGraffle file uploaded?
No. It is read by code in this browser tab and never sent to TaskNinja or any other server.
My .graffle file is a folder. What do I do?
That is a package, which OmniGraffle saves when a drawing holds pictures. Zip the folder (right-click, Compress, or Send to compressed folder) and open the .zip here.
Which OmniGraffle versions work?
Drawings, templates and stencils saved by OmniGraffle 5, 6 and 7 on Mac or iPad, including the newer zip based flat file from 7.16 on, and package folders once zipped.
Can I edit the diagram?
No. This is a viewer. You can read, zoom, copy text and export, but changes need OmniGraffle or another diagram app.
Can I get the text out of the diagram?
Yes. Click a shape and press Copy text, or download the CSV for every shape's text, notes and data in one sheet.
