How to convert CGPA to percentage: the formula for CBSE, VTU, Anna University, AKTU, GTU and SPPU
Convert CGPA to percentage with your board's rule: CBSE × 9.5, VTU (CGPA - 0.75) × 10, GTU (CGPA - 0.5) × 10, Anna University × 10. Tables and a free tool.
A job form or an admission portal asks for your percentage, and your mark sheet only shows a CGPA. Most people search for the formula, find "multiply by 9.5", and stop there. That is only right for CBSE. Many universities publish their own rule, and the same CGPA can come out several marks apart depending on which one you use.
This guide lists the official formula for the boards and universities students ask about most, with a link to the document each one comes from. Every percentage in the tables was worked out by the code behind our free CGPA to percentage converter, which has these rules built in.
The short answer
Use the formula printed on your own mark sheet or in your university's regulations. If you cannot find one, plain CGPA × 10 is the most common rule for universities on a 10 point scale, and CGPA × 9.5 is the CBSE rule.
| Board or university | Formula | Where it is written |
|---|---|---|
| CBSE (Class 10 CGPA results) | CGPA × 9.5 | CBSE FAQ, "indicative percentage" |
| VTU, 2015, 2017 and 2018 schemes | (CGPA - 0.75) × 10 | VTU CGPA standard formula page |
| Anna University, Regulations 2021 | CGPA × 10 | UG Academic Regulations 2021, clause 15.5.3 |
| AKTU (B.Tech ordinance) | CGPA × 10 | B.Tech ordinance, clause 15 |
| GTU (from the winter 2011 exams) | (CGPA - 0.5) × 10 | GTU notification 1/2012 |
| SPPU | Depends on your final grade, see below | SPPU circular 332/2020 |
What a CGPA works out to under each rule
Here is the same CGPA run through the four common rules. The gap between CBSE and plain × 10 is half a mark for every point of CGPA, so it grows as your CGPA goes up.
| CGPA | CBSE (× 9.5) | Plain × 10 | VTU old (- 0.75) | GTU (- 0.5) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 6.0 | 57.00% | 60.00% | 52.50% | 55.00% |
| 6.5 | 61.75% | 65.00% | 57.50% | 60.00% |
| 7.0 | 66.50% | 70.00% | 62.50% | 65.00% |
| 7.5 | 71.25% | 75.00% | 67.50% | 70.00% |
| 8.0 | 76.00% | 80.00% | 72.50% | 75.00% |
| 8.2 | 77.90% | 82.00% | 74.50% | 77.00% |
| 8.5 | 80.75% | 85.00% | 77.50% | 80.00% |
| 9.0 | 85.50% | 90.00% | 82.50% | 85.00% |
| 9.5 | 90.25% | 95.00% | 87.50% | 90.00% |
| 10.0 | 95.00% | 100.00% | 92.50% | 95.00% |

What CBSE says about 9.5
CBSE's own FAQ, written for the years when Class 10 results came as grades, says the overall "indicative" percentage of marks is 9.5 × CGPA, and the same 9.5 × grade point for each subject. It does not explain the 9.5 or call the result an exact score. So if a college asks for your CBSE percentage, use 9.5 and, where the form allows it, note that it is the indicative figure from the CBSE formula.
SPPU: the formula changes with your grade
Savitribai Phule Pune University does not use one straight line. Its circular 332/2020 gives a separate equation for each final grade on your mark sheet. Read the grade first, then pick the matching line.
| Final grade | Formula | Example |
|---|---|---|
| O | 20 × CGPA - 100 | 9.6 gives 92.00% |
| A+ | 12 × CGPA - 25 | 8.8 gives 80.60% |
| A | 10 × CGPA - 7.5 | 7.5 gives 67.50% |
| B+ | 5 × CGPA + 26.25 | 6.2 gives 57.25% |
| B and C | 10 × CGPA - 2.5 | |
| D | 6.6 × CGPA + 13.6 |
Going the other way: percentage to CGPA
Some forms ask for a CGPA when you only have a percentage. Run the same formula backwards. Under CBSE, divide by 9.5. Under VTU's old rule, divide by 10 and add 0.75.
| Percentage | CBSE | Plain × 10 | VTU old |
|---|---|---|---|
| 60% | 6.32 | 6.00 | 6.75 |
| 75% | 7.89 | 7.50 | 8.25 |
| 97% | Not possible | 9.70 | Not possible |
97% cannot come from a CGPA of 10 or less under CBSE or VTU's old rule, so our tool says so instead of giving a CGPA above 10.
If you only have SGPAs
Each semester's SGPA has to be combined into a CGPA first. Most universities weight each semester by its credits: multiply each SGPA by that semester's credits, add them up, and divide by the total credits. For SGPAs of 8.2, 7.6 and 8.9 over 20, 22 and 24 credits, that is 544.8 ÷ 66 = 8.25, which is 82.50% under plain × 10. Our SGPA to CGPA calculator does this and shows each step. If you leave all the credits empty it takes a simple average, but it will not mix the two.
What our converter cannot do
- It only knows the rules listed above, plus a My own formula option where you type the multiplier and the number to add. Other universities (Mumbai University, state boards, autonomous colleges) often print their own rule, so check yours.
- For SPPU it trusts the grade you pick. Today it does not check that the CGPA fits that grade, so CGPA 8.0 with grade O gives 60% with no warning. Read the grade off your mark sheet, not from memory.
- It works on a 10 point scale only. A value above 10 is refused, but a 4 point GPA like 3.4 typed under a 10 point rule is accepted as 34%, which is wrong. Use My own formula for 4 point scales.
- AICTE does not publish one national formula, so there is no AICTE option. If an employer insists on one, ask them which rule they want.
- Any converted figure is indicative. If an admission or job really depends on it, ask your university for a conversion certificate.
Everything runs in your browser. In our test the only network calls after the page loaded were anonymous usage events that do not carry your CGPA.
FAQ
What is 8.2 CGPA in percentage?
77.90% under the CBSE rule, 82% under plain × 10, 74.50% under VTU's old rule and 77% under GTU's rule.
What is 9 CGPA in percentage?
85.50% under CBSE, 90% under plain × 10, 82.50% under VTU's old rule and 85% under GTU's rule.
Is CGPA × 9.5 correct for engineering colleges?
Usually not. 9.5 is the CBSE rule. VTU, GTU and SPPU each publish their own rule, and Anna University and AKTU use × 10. Check your regulations.
Which VTU students use (CGPA - 0.75) × 10?
VTU's page applies it to the 2015, 2017 and 2018 schemes only. If you are on a newer scheme, check your scheme's regulations or ask your college.
Can I write my converted percentage on a government form?
If the form asks for a percentage and your board has a published rule, using that rule is normal. Keep your mark sheet ready, because the form usually wants the CGPA as well.
