What this tool does

Open a DXF file online and see every layer, hatch, and block. Pan, zoom, measure, and save PNG or PDF. Free, no AutoCAD, and the file stays in your browser.

How to use it

  1. Choose a .dxf file or drop it on the box. DWG files work here too.

  2. The drawing opens fitted to the screen. Drag to pan and scroll or pinch to zoom.

  3. Turn layers on or off in the list under the drawing, and press Measure to check a distance.

  4. Download PNG or PDF of the view you see. Nothing is uploaded.

Common uses

DXF is the open drawing format that almost every CAD and CAM program can write. You meet it when a laser cutting shop asks for a cut file, when a CNC router or plasma table needs a profile, when a fabricator shares a sheet metal flat pattern, or when SolidWorks, Fusion, FreeCAD, LibreCAD, QCAD, Inkscape, or an engineering calculator exports 2D geometry. Before you send a DXF to a vendor, it helps to open it and check that the right outline is there and nothing stray is left far off the part.

This viewer reads ASCII DXF of any version, from old R12 files to the 2018 format. Binary DXF is not supported, so if your program offers both, pick ASCII. The file is parsed in a background worker in your browser, then drawn with WebGL. A 35 MB DXF with more than 200,000 objects opened in under two seconds in our tests. Fit to screen reframes the main drawing whenever you get lost. Stray objects far away from it, such as a point left at the origin, are left out of the frame, and a note under the drawing says so. The canvas starts dark, like AutoCAD, and Light canvas turns it white.

For cut files, the layer list is the quickest check. Many shops expect cut lines, engraving, and bend lines on separate layers. Turn one layer off at a time to see what sits on it. Hatches and solid fills are drawn, blocks are expanded in place, and text uses an open font. The file info shows the DXF version, the units set in the header, the overall width and height of the drawing, and how many lines, arcs, circles, and other objects it holds.

Measure gives a straight-line distance between two clicked points, with the horizontal and vertical parts beside it. Use it to confirm an overall size, a hole spacing, or a sheet width before you pay for material. Points are not snapped, so zoom in on the corner first. If the header says inches or millimetres, the number carries that unit. Many exported DXF files leave the unit unset, so read the number as drawing units and check with the person who made the file.

Private, and the limits

A DXF can hold a product design, a part your company sells, or a client's floor plan. This page does not upload it. The file is read by your browser and drawn in this tab. TaskNinja does not receive, store, or look at it, and it is not sent to an AI model. The PNG and PDF you download are made on your device too.

DXF viewing has a few limits here. Dashed and centre line types draw as solid lines. 3D faces show flat, 3D solids are skipped, and paper space layouts are not plotted to scale. Images linked from the drawing and external references are not loaded, because they are separate files. If a DXF is damaged or is not really a DXF, you see a clear message instead of an empty canvas.

FAQ

Can I open a DXF file without installing software?
Yes. Open this page, choose the DXF, and it draws in the browser on a computer, tablet, or phone.
Is the DXF file uploaded anywhere?
No. The DXF is read and drawn on your device. It does not leave the browser tab.
Does it open binary DXF?
Not yet. Save the file again as ASCII DXF, or as DWG, and open that copy here.
Can I check a laser cutting or CNC file?
Yes. Look at each layer, measure the overall size and key distances, and confirm nothing stray sits outside the part before you send it.
How do I turn a DXF into a PDF?
Open the DXF, hide any layers you do not want, set the view, and press Download PDF. The page is A4 with a white background for printing, and it fits the view.
Why is my measurement in units, not mm?
The DXF header does not say which unit it uses. Many exports leave this blank. Ask whoever made the file, or compare with a known size.
