What this tool does

Compare two paragraphs, lists or documents and find every change: added, removed and edited lines with changed words marked. Free, private, in your browser.

How to use it

  1. Paste the older version on the left and the newer version on the right. For files, use Open file on each side.

  2. Tick Ignore case, Ignore extra spaces or Ignore blank lines if those differences do not matter to you.

  3. Tap Compare text and read the changes. Copy them, or download a .diff file to keep a record.

Common uses

Most text comparisons in daily work are not about code. An office assistant checks whether the final copy of a circular matches the approved draft. A lawyer or tenant compares two versions of an agreement. A writer sees what an editor changed, a student compares an answer with the model answer, and an accountant checks two exported lists of invoice numbers. In each case the question is the same: what exactly is different between these two texts?

This page answers that in one step. The headline says how many places differ, followed by the number of lines added, removed, edited in place and left unchanged, and how much of the text is the same. Below it every change is listed with line numbers from both versions. Edited lines show the old and new wording together with the changed words marked, so a reworded clause or a changed figure stands out at once. Try the example button to compare the Preamble of the Constitution of India as adopted in 1949 with the text after the 42nd Amendment in 1976: the tool marks the added words SOCIALIST SECULAR and and integrity.

Lists compare well too. Paste two columns of names, roll numbers or invoice numbers, one per line, and the result shows which entries were added and which went missing. Tick Ignore extra spaces when one list came from a spreadsheet with stray spaces, and Ignore case when one list is in capitals. For very long lists or exported files, open them as files: they are compared in a background worker and the page stays responsive.

The tool compares the words, not the formatting. Bold, colours, fonts and page layout from Word or PDF are not part of a plain text comparison. Copy the text out of those documents and paste it in, and line breaks are kept as they are.

Private, and the limits

Both texts stay in your browser. Nothing is uploaded or saved, and there are no accounts or share links, so private documents can be compared safely. Closing the tab clears both boxes.

Results are as exact as the text you paste. If a document was retyped or converted from a scan, small differences in spacing or punctuation will also show. Use the ignore options to hide the ones that do not matter.

FAQ

How can I compare two paragraphs online?
Paste one paragraph in each box and tap Compare text. The words that changed are marked, and the headline says how many places differ.
Can I compare two lists to find missing items?
Yes. Put one item per line in each box. Items only in the first list show with a minus sign and items only in the second list with a plus sign.
Is my text stored anywhere?
No. The comparison runs on your device and nothing is sent to a server. There is no history and no share link.
Can it compare Word or PDF documents?
Copy the text from the Word or PDF file and paste it in each box. Plain text files such as .txt and .csv can be opened directly.
How do I ignore differences in spaces or capital letters?
Tick Ignore extra spaces and Ignore case before you compare. Lines that differ only in those ways then count as the same.
