What this tool does

Find the fonts, plug-ins and missing footage an After Effects .aep project needs, in your browser and without After Effects. Copy the list. Nothing is uploaded.

How to use it

  1. Choose the .aep project or .aet template. It stays on your device.

  2. Read the Fonts section for each font family and style with the layers that use it, and the Plug-ins section for every third-party effect.

  3. Press Copy font list, or download the text report, and install or license what is missing before opening the project.

Common uses

The first thing many people see when they open a template or a project from someone else is a warning about missing fonts and missing effects, followed by red placeholder text and broken layers. After Effects only names the missing fonts after the project is open, and only on a computer that has After Effects, so you cannot check a template before you buy the plug-ins, and a client or a producer cannot check what a freelancer used without the program. This page reads the project file directly and lists what it depends on.

Fonts are read from each text layer, including layers where several fonts are mixed, and shown as family and style, for example Montserrat Bold, with the PostScript name After Effects uses and the composition and layer for each use. Links help you look the family up on Google Fonts or Adobe Fonts. Fonts that After Effects uses internally are left out, so the list is only the ones you need to install.

Plug-ins are split into built-in Adobe effects, which every copy of After Effects has, and third-party effects, which must be bought or installed separately. Well known ones are named with their vendor, such as Trapcode Particular and Shine from Maxon, Sapphire from Boris FX, Element 3D, Optical Flares and Saber from Video Copilot, Deep Glow and Twixtor, along with how many layers use each. Unknown effects still appear with the internal name After Effects stores, which is usually enough to search for.

The Footage section completes the picture: every image, video, audio file and image sequence with the path it had on the original computer, marked when After Effects already saw it as missing. Together this makes a simple checklist to send back to whoever made the project, or to plan a font licence before a client delivery.

It also helps after the fact. When an older project opens with placeholder fonts, the list here shows the exact family and style the designer picked, so you can restore the original look instead of guessing. When a template is resold or shared inside a team, the text report gives a short record of its fonts, plug-ins and footage that anyone can read without After Effects, on a phone or a laptop.

Private, and the limits

Everything is done on your computer. The project is read in this tab, and nothing about it, including the file name or the fonts inside, is sent to TaskNinja.

The list shows what the project uses, not what is installed on your computer. Licences for fonts and plug-ins come from their makers, and some free fonts have different names on Google Fonts.

FAQ

How do I find which fonts an AEP file uses?
Open the .aep here and look at Fonts. Each family and style is listed with the layers that use it, and Copy font list puts them all on your clipboard.
Can I see missing plug-ins before opening the project?
Yes. The Plug-ins section lists every third-party effect with its vendor, so you know what to install before After Effects reports missing effects.
Does it find fonts in .aet templates?
Yes. Templates saved as .aet are read the same way as projects.
Are missing footage files listed too?
Yes. Footage shows each file with its original path, and files After Effects marked as missing get a Missing badge.
Is the project uploaded to find the fonts?
No. Nothing is sent anywhere. The finder runs inside this tab.
