What this tool does

Unlock PDF removes a password from a PDF you can already open. It runs in this browser and does not guess passwords.

How to use it

  1. Choose the PDF. Its name, size, and status appear at the top: Password protected, Restrictions only, or No password.

  2. If it asks, type the password you already know. The note under the box lists the e-Aadhaar format from UIDAI. For a bank or card file, use the password in the email that came with it.

  3. Press Unlock PDF. A wrong password is shown on the page, and the file stays so you can try again.

  4. Download the file. The name ends in -unlocked.pdf. Open it once and check that it no longer asks for a password.

Common uses

Many documents in India arrive locked. An e-Aadhaar download, a bank or credit-card statement, a CAS from a mutual-fund registrar, a salary slip, a Form 16, and an insurance policy are often password-protected. Sites that offer to unlock a PDF usually upload it. This page opens the file in your browser, and the password you type is used only in this tab.

UIDAI publishes the password for the e-Aadhaar PDF. It is the first four letters of the name in CAPITALS, then the year of birth. Suresh, born in 1990, gives SURE1990. A name shorter than four letters uses the letters it has, then the year. The box is not filled in for you. A name and a year are not read out of the file.

Bank, card, salary, and insurance PDFs do not share one official pattern. The email or SMS from the bank usually says how the password is built, often from part of a name, a date of birth, or a customer ID. If that message is gone, use the bank’s own password help rather than trying strings at random. This tool accepts only the password you type. It does not run through dates or names.

Some PDFs open straight away and still block printing or copying. That is an owner password: a restriction, not a lock on opening the file. The page marks them Restrictions only. Remove restrictions clears it. QPDF, the open-source program that also compresses PDFs on this site, does that with an empty password. The finished file says Restrictions removed. You do not need an owner password you were never given.

The download is an ordinary PDF. Shrink it for an upload limit with Compress PDF, keep selected pages with Split PDF, or make a page into a picture with PDF to JPG. Keep the locked original too. A digital signature on the locked file can stop verifying once the password is removed, because the encryption that covered it is gone.

Private, and the limits

Unlocking runs in this browser with QPDF compiled to WebAssembly, from the open-source qpdf-wasm build. The PDF and the password are not uploaded to TaskNinja, not stored on an account, and not placed in a request by this tool. There is no signup and no watermark. Close the tab and the working copy is gone. Download the file if you want to keep the unlocked version.

This tool cannot open a PDF when you do not know the password. It does not try words, dates, PAN numbers, or names by itself. A wrong password is an error on the page, and the file you chose stays selected. A PDF that already opens with no password is returned as it is, with nothing to remove. Very large files depend on the memory in your browser.

FAQ

Is my PDF or the password uploaded?
No. The file and the password stay in this browser tab. The unlock program is loaded from this website, and the PDF is not sent out.
Can it unlock a PDF if I forgot the password?
No. Without the password, this page cannot open the file. It does not guess, and it does not keep a list of common passwords.
What is the password for an e-Aadhaar PDF?
UIDAI sets it as the first four letters of the name in CAPITALS plus the year of birth. Suresh and 1990 make SURE1990. A shorter name uses only the letters it has, then the year.
Where is the password for a bank statement?
In the email or SMS that came with the statement. Banks do not all use the same rule, so check that message. This page will not invent one.
What does Restrictions only mean?
The PDF opens without a password, but printing, copying, or editing is blocked. Remove restrictions clears that block, and the download says Restrictions removed.
Why does the page say the PDF has no password?
The file is not encrypted. There is nothing to unlock. Download it again if you need a copy, and use that file as it is.
