What this tool does

Convert OneNote .one sections and .onepkg notebooks to PDF in your browser. Every page, selectable text, pictures and drawings. Free, and nothing is uploaded.

How to use it

  1. Choose the .one sections, the .onepkg notebook or a ZIP of the notebook folder. Nothing is uploaded.

  2. Check the pages in the list and open a few to see that the notes look right.

  3. Press Download PDF for the whole notebook, or This page as PDF for the page on screen. The PDF is made on your device.

Common uses

A PDF is the easiest way to share or keep OneNote notes. Anyone can open it, it prints the same everywhere, and it does not depend on a Microsoft account or a sync service. OneNote can export to PDF itself, but only if you have the desktop app, the notebook is open in it, and you export each section or notebook by hand. When all you have is the file, perhaps a .onepkg from a teacher, a folder of .one sections from a former colleague, or a ZIP downloaded from OneDrive, this converter does the job in the browser instead.

Every note page becomes part of one A4 PDF. Each page starts with its title, then a grey line with the section path and date, followed by the notes: headings, paragraphs with bold, italic, underline and strikethrough, numbered and bulleted lists with their numbers worked out as OneNote shows them, to-do tags as ticked or empty boxes, simple tables with borders, PNG and JPEG pictures at their stored quality, and pen drawings as vector lines. Long pages flow onto as many PDF pages as they need. Text is real text in the Liberation Sans font, so you can search the PDF and copy from it.

Typical jobs are handing in class notes as a PDF, attaching meeting notes to an email for someone who does not use OneNote, printing a recipe or study notebook, or keeping a read-only copy of a notebook before an account is closed. If a portal limits the file size, pass the PDF through Compress PDF afterwards. To combine it with other documents, use Merge PDF.

Private, and the limits

The conversion happens entirely in your browser. The OneNote file is read by the open-source onenote.rs parser running as WebAssembly in a worker, and the PDF is written by pdf-lib in the same tab. No copy of the notebook or the PDF is sent anywhere, and nothing is kept after you close the page.

The PDF is a clean reading of the notes, not a print of the OneNote canvas. Containers that sat side by side are placed one under the other, text colours become black, highlights are shown in grey, and every font becomes Liberation Sans. Pictures in GIF, TIFF, BMP or EMF form are marked in the PDF but not drawn, and are still in the pictures ZIP. Recordings are listed by name, equations become plain text, and password protected sections cannot be converted.
