What this tool does

Pick a photo to see what it says about you, such as where it was taken, which phone took it and when, then save a clean copy with that information removed.

How to use it

  1. Tap Choose photos and pick one or more JPG, PNG, WebP, HEIC or AVIF pictures. Photos straight from an iPhone or Android phone work, and you can pick a whole folder's worth at once.

  2. Read the summary for each photo. Location shows the GPS position with a See on map link, followed by the camera or phone, lens, date taken, software, owner names and serial numbers, captions and camera settings. Tap Show all tags to read every field.

  3. Choose what to remove. Everything removes all of it. Location only removes GPS and place names but keeps the camera, settings and dates, which is useful for photography groups.

  4. Tap Remove metadata or Remove location. Each clean file is read again to confirm nothing was left, then you can download it, or download all of them as one ZIP.

Common uses

Every photo from a phone carries a hidden label called EXIF. It is written by the camera at the moment you take the picture and usually includes the exact GPS position to a few metres, the date and time, the phone model and sometimes its serial number. Editing apps add their own XMP and IPTC fields, such as the software used, an author name, a city or a caption. You never see any of this in the gallery, but anyone who gets the original file can read it. A photo of your new flat, your child's school or a product you are selling online can tell a stranger exactly where it was taken.

This viewer reads all the common places where that information hides: EXIF and its GPS section, XMP, IPTC, JPEG comments, PNG text chunks, WebP and HEIC metadata, the small preview picture that cameras store inside the file, camera maker notes, and extra data stuck after the end of the picture. The summary at the top puts the risky parts in plain words first, so you do not have to know what GPSLatitudeRef or DateTimeOriginal means.

Removing metadata here does not touch the picture itself. Most online removers decode and save the photo again, which costs quality and changes the file. This tool copies the compressed picture data byte for byte and only drops the metadata parts, so a 4 MB photo stays a sharp 4 MB photo minus the hidden data. Two things are kept on purpose: the orientation flag, so a portrait photo stays the right way up, and the colour profile, so colours do not shift. We tested JPG, PNG, WebP, HEIC and AVIF files from Nikon, Canon, Samsung and Nokia cameras and checked each cleaned file with ExifTool, the standard metadata reader; no location, camera or date fields were left, and the decoded pixels were identical to the original.

Some apps remove metadata when you share a photo, and many do not. Files sent as a document, by email, through cloud links or uploaded to many websites usually keep everything. Cleaning the photo yourself before you share it is the only way to be sure. For many photos at once, pick them all, choose Everything and download the ZIP.

Private, and the limits

Your photos never leave your device. They are read and cleaned inside this browser tab, in a background worker, and nothing is uploaded to TaskNinja or anyone else. That matters for a tool like this: sending a photo to a server to remove its location would mean handing the location to that server first. The map link only opens if you tap it, and it sends just the coordinates to OpenStreetMap.

TIFF and camera RAW files, GIFs and videos are not cleaned here. For those, convert the picture to JPG or PNG first, then clean the converted copy. Changing a photo's file date on your computer is not the same as removing metadata; this tool removes what is stored inside the file.

FAQ

How do I see the EXIF data of a photo online?
Tap Choose photos and pick the picture. The location, camera, date, software and owner details appear at once, and Show all tags lists every field. The photo is read in your browser and is not uploaded.
How do I remove the location from a photo?
Pick the photo, choose Location only, tap Remove location and download the clean copy. GPS coordinates and place names such as the city are removed, while the camera and date stay.
Does removing EXIF data reduce photo quality?
No. The picture data is copied exactly and is not re-compressed. Only the metadata is dropped, so the clean file is usually a little smaller and looks the same.
Will my photo turn sideways after removing EXIF?
No. Phones often save portrait photos sideways with an orientation flag. This tool keeps that one flag, so the photo still shows the right way up everywhere.
Does it work with iPhone HEIC photos?
Yes. HEIC and HEIF photos are read and cleaned as HEIC, without converting them. To also turn them into JPG, use the HEIC to JPG converter after cleaning.
Can I clean many photos at once?
Yes. Pick up to 200 photos together and download them all as one ZIP. Each file is named with -clean added before the extension.
