What this tool does

EndNote Library Viewer opens an EndNote library in this browser, lists every reference with its groups and attachments, and saves it as RIS, BibTeX, EndNote XML or CSV.

How to use it

  1. Choose an .enlx compressed library or an .enl file, or drop it on the box. A ZIP of the .enl together with its .Data folder works too. Nothing is uploaded.

  2. The first references show within a moment while the rest of the library is read in the background, with a progress line for big libraries.

  3. Search by author, title, year, DOI or keyword, or pick a group or a reference type. Tap a reference to read every field, copy it as RIS or save an attached PDF.

  4. Press Download RIS, BibTeX, EndNote XML or CSV. If a search or group is active, only the matching references are saved.

Common uses

EndNote from Clarivate is the reference manager many universities, hospitals and research labs have used for decades, and a thesis or a systematic review often lives inside one EndNote library. The library is a database, not a document, so nothing else opens it: Zotero, Mendeley and Word cannot read an .enl file, and EndNote itself needs a paid licence. That becomes a problem when a student licence runs out after graduation, when a supervisor or co-author sends a library and you do not have EndNote, when you move to Zotero or Mendeley and the old copy of EndNote is gone, or when you only want to check what is inside a backup from years ago.

This page reads the library file itself. EndNote 20, 21 and 2025 keep references in an SQLite database, and EndNote X1 to X9 use an older MySQL style table layout inside the .Data folder; both are read here directly, so there is nothing to install and no EndNote or database software is needed. A compressed .enlx library holds the .enl and its .Data folder in one file, which is why it is the easiest thing to open. For an older .enl on its own, zip it together with its .Data folder first, because in those versions the .enl can be little more than a pointer.

Once open, you see how many references the library holds, which EndNote generation saved it, the range of years and the most common reference type. Groups and group sets appear with their counts, smart groups included, and references in the trash are hidden unless you ask for them. Each reference shows its fields with EndNote's own names, such as Journal or book title, DOI, Keywords, Abstract, Notes and Research notes, along with the date it was added and its record number. Attached PDFs stored inside the library can be saved one by one when they are in the file you opened.

The exports are made for moving on. RIS is read by Zotero, Mendeley, Papers, Citavi and EndNote itself. BibTeX gives a .bib file for LaTeX and Overleaf, with readable keys such as Watson1953Molecular. EndNote XML keeps the most fields and is the format Zotero recommends for EndNote moves. CSV opens in Excel or Google Sheets for screening or counting. Groups are written into each reference as a keyword like Group: Chapter 2, so they survive the move as tags. We tested public libraries with up to 6,072 references, saved by EndNote X7 to EndNote 21, and all of them opened.

Private, and the limits

The library never leaves your device. It is read by code running in this tab, in a background worker, and the exports are made on your computer. There is no upload, no account and no AI model, so unpublished research, peer review notes and patient study references stay private. Closing the tab clears everything.

This is a viewer and exporter, not a replacement for EndNote. It does not format citations in Word, edit the library or sync with EndNote online. Rich text inside fields, such as italics or superscript, is shown as plain text. EndNote is a trademark of Clarivate. TaskNinja is not connected to Clarivate.

FAQ

How do I open an .enl file without EndNote?
Choose the file on this page. An .enl from EndNote 20 or later opens on its own. For an .enl from EndNote X9 or older, zip it together with its .Data folder and open the ZIP.
Is my EndNote library uploaded anywhere?
No. This browser tab reads the library and makes the exports, and TaskNinja never sees it. Nothing is kept after you close the tab.
Why does my .enl file say it is only a pointer?
In some EndNote versions the .enl is a tiny file and the references live in the .Data folder next to it. Open the .enlx instead, or zip the .enl with its .Data folder.
Can I move my EndNote library to Zotero?
Yes. Download EndNote XML or RIS here, then in Zotero choose File, Import and pick that file. Your groups arrive as tags named Group: and the group name.
Are attached PDFs included?
The list shows every attached file. PDFs kept inside the library can be saved from the reference when they are in the .enlx or ZIP you opened. RIS and XML exports keep the file names.
Does it work with very large libraries?
Yes. A library with several thousand references opens in about a second on a laptop, with the first page shown straight away. Files up to 1 GB can be opened.
