What this tool does

Count characters with and without spaces, check X, Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube and SMS limits, and count Hindi letters correctly. Free, nothing is uploaded.

How to use it

  1. Paste or type your text into the box, or open a .docx, .pdf, .odt, .rtf or .txt file.

  2. If you have a character limit, type it next to Limit and choose characters.

  3. Tap Count words. Characters and characters without spaces show in the first row, and the post limits list shows how many characters each platform has left.

  4. Edit the text and the counts update as you type.

  5. Copy summary or Download CSV to keep the numbers.

Common uses

A character limit counts every letter, digit, space and punctuation mark. Without spaces leaves out spaces, tabs and line breaks. Both numbers are shown, along with the word count, so one paste answers any form that asks for either.

Platforms count differently. X counts each link as 23 characters and each emoji or Chinese, Japanese or Korean character as 2, within a 280 limit, while Hindi counts 1 a character. Instagram captions allow 2,200 characters, LinkedIn posts 3,000, YouTube titles 100 and descriptions 5,000, and these count line breaks too. The page works out each platform's own count, so a caption that fits here fits there.

An SMS fits 160 plain characters, or 153 per part when longer. A single Hindi letter, emoji or ₹ sign makes the whole message Unicode, which fits 70, or 67 per part. The counter shows which kind your message is and how many parts it needs.

In Hindi and Marathi a syllable such as कि is two Unicode characters but one letter on screen. The page shows both, so you can match what your form or app counts.

Character limits turn up in many everyday places: a Google Business description of 750 characters, a meta description for a web page that search engines cut off after about 155 to 160, a job portal summary, an exam form's address box or an app store listing. Set your own limit next to Limit, choose characters, and the line under the counts tells you how many are left or how many to cut. The count keeps updating as you edit, so you can shorten a sentence and see the result straight away, without pressing anything again.

Large texts are fine too. A chapter, a whole thesis or a long transcript in a .docx, .pdf or .txt file is read and counted on your own device in about a second on a laptop, and the page stays quick because very long texts are counted without being shown in the box.

Private, and the limits

The text you paste stays in this browser tab. TaskNinja never receives or stores it, there is no account, and counting carries on even if you go offline after the page has loaded. Files you open are read on your device, not sent anywhere. Only anonymous usage events are counted, never your words.

When you close or reload the tab, the text is gone. Nothing is saved in your browser either.

FAQ

Do spaces count as characters?
Yes, in most character limits. The page shows characters with spaces and characters without spaces so you can use either.
How many characters is an X post?
280, but X counts every link as 23, and each emoji or Chinese, Japanese or Korean character as 2. The page shows the X count with those rules.
How many characters fit in one SMS?
160 in plain English text, or 70 if the message has any Hindi letter, emoji or ₹ sign. Longer messages are split into parts of 153 or 67.
How do I count characters in Hindi?
Paste the Hindi text. Characters shows each Unicode character, as Word counts them, and Letters as you see them counts कि as one, as LibreOffice does.
Is my text uploaded?
No. Everything is counted in your browser. Nothing is uploaded.
