What this tool does

Convert SMART Notebook .notebook lessons to PDF or PNG in your browser, without SMART software. Every page, at its own size. Free, and nothing is uploaded.

How to use it

  1. Choose the .notebook file. Nothing is uploaded.

  2. Page 1 shows at once. Wait a moment for the progress line to finish while the other pages are drawn.

  3. Press Download PDF. For pictures instead, use Page as PNG or All pages as PNG (ZIP).

Common uses

A PDF is the easiest way to share a SMART Board lesson with people who do not have SMART Notebook. Parents, students and colleagues can open it on any phone or laptop, it prints the same everywhere, and it uploads cleanly to Google Classroom, Microsoft Teams, Moodle or a school website. It is also how many teachers keep an archive of old lessons when a school changes whiteboard brand or stops paying for the SMART Learning Suite licence. Normally you need SMART Notebook itself to export a PDF. This page does the same job in the browser, for free.

Each lesson page becomes one PDF page at the size the lesson was made, usually a 4:3 or 16:9 whiteboard page, so nothing is cropped or squashed. Pages come out in the order set in the Page Sorter, including pages added later in a different place. Pictures are kept in their original quality inside each page, pen ink and shapes stay sharp because pages are drawn at twice their size, and page backgrounds are kept. The PDF pages are pictures of the lesson pages, so text in the PDF cannot be selected; if you need the words, press Copy text or Download text, which give you every word page by page.

If you want slides rather than a PDF, All pages as PNG (ZIP) saves every page as a picture that you can drop into PowerPoint, Google Slides or Keynote, one picture per slide. Pictures as ZIP gives you the photos and clip art from the lesson on their own, and files the teacher attached, such as worksheets or answer keys, are listed under the page and can be saved one by one. To make the PDF smaller for email, run it through the PDF compressor afterwards.

Private, and the limits

The conversion runs entirely in your browser. The lesson is read from your disk by a worker in this tab, and the PDF is made on your device. No copy of the lesson, its file name or anything in it is sent to TaskNinja or anyone else, and nothing is kept after you close the page.

Interactive parts of a lesson cannot go into a PDF. Flash activities show as a labelled box, and videos, sounds and Lesson Activity Builder games do not play. Old .xbk files from SMART Notebook 9.1 and earlier need to be saved again as .notebook first. TaskNinja is not affiliated with SMART Technologies.
