What this tool does

Income Tax Calculator works out your tax for FY 2026-27 under both the new and the old regime, side by side, and tells you which one costs less.

How to use it

  1. Enter your gross yearly salary or pension. Add interest, rent and any other income in the second box.

  2. Pick your age group. It only changes the old regime, because the new regime has the same slabs at every age.

  3. If you might choose the old regime, fill in 80C, HRA exemption, home loan interest, 80D, NPS and professional tax. Each box shows the legal limit when you go over it.

  4. Read the two totals. The lower one is marked, and the line under it says how much the other regime would cost you.

  5. Open Show slab working to see each slab, then Copy summary or Download CSV to keep the result.

Common uses

Every April your employer asks which regime you want for TDS, and every July you choose again when you file. The new regime is the default from tax year 2026-27 under section 202 of the Income-tax Act, 2025, so you only pay old regime rates if you opt out. This calculator shows both answers at once, so you can see in a few seconds whether your 80C, HRA and home loan claims are worth giving up the lower slabs.

New regime slabs for FY 2026-27: up to ₹4 lakh nil, ₹4 to 8 lakh 5%, ₹8 to 12 lakh 10%, ₹12 to 16 lakh 15%, ₹16 to 20 lakh 20%, ₹20 to 24 lakh 25%, and above ₹24 lakh 30%. Salaried people get a ₹75,000 standard deduction, and the section 156 rebate of up to ₹60,000 makes tax nil when taxable income is ₹12 lakh or less. That is why a salary of ₹12.75 lakh pays no tax. Just above ₹12 lakh, marginal relief keeps your tax from being more than the income above ₹12 lakh, and the calculator applies it for you.

Old regime slabs: up to ₹2.5 lakh nil (₹3 lakh at 60 to 79, ₹5 lakh at 80 and above), up to ₹5 lakh 5%, ₹5 to 10 lakh 20%, and above ₹10 lakh 30%. The standard deduction is ₹50,000 and the rebate is up to ₹12,500 when taxable income is ₹5 lakh or less. In exchange you can claim 80C up to ₹1.5 lakh, HRA exemption, home loan interest up to ₹2 lakh on a self-occupied house, 80D health insurance, ₹50,000 extra NPS under 80CCD(1B) and professional tax.

Both regimes add surcharge on high incomes: 10% above ₹50 lakh, 15% above ₹1 crore, 25% above ₹2 crore, and 37% above ₹5 crore in the old regime only, because the new regime stops at 25%. Marginal relief is applied at each step. Then 4% health and education cess is added on tax plus surcharge. The final figure is rounded to the nearest ₹10, as the return does.

If the new regime wins, the calculator also tells you roughly how much more you would need to claim in deductions for the old regime to break even. That number is useful when you are deciding whether a bigger home loan, an ELSS top up or a health policy changes the answer.

Private, and the limits

Salary figures are private. Everything here is worked out by code running in your browser tab. Nothing you type is sent to TaskNinja, saved, or logged, and there is no account. We only count anonymous events such as the calculator being used, never the amounts.

This is an estimate for resident and non-resident individuals with salary and normal slab-rate income. It does not handle capital gains taxed at special rates, lottery winnings, agricultural income, business presumptive schemes or HUF. Employer NPS, leave encashment, gratuity and similar items should already be excluded from the salary you enter if they are exempt. For filing, use the figures in your Form 16 and the official e-filing portal, and ask a chartered accountant when in doubt.

FAQ

Is income up to ₹12 lakh tax free in FY 2026-27?
Under the new regime, yes for resident individuals. Tax on ₹12 lakh is ₹60,000 and the section 156 rebate cancels it. With the ₹75,000 standard deduction, a salary up to ₹12.75 lakh pays no tax.
Did Budget 2026 change the tax slabs?
No. The Budget 2026 memorandum says the rates for tax year 2026-27 stay as already enacted, for both regimes.
Which is better, old or new regime?
For most salaries the new regime costs less unless you claim large deductions, usually HRA plus a home loan plus full 80C. Enter your numbers and the calculator shows the answer and the break-even deduction amount.
What is tax year 2026-27?
The Income-tax Act, 2025 replaces the terms previous year and assessment year with a single tax year. Tax year 2026-27 is the same period as FY 2026-27, from 1 April 2026 to 31 March 2027.
Does age change my tax?
Only in the old regime, where people aged 60 to 79 get a ₹3 lakh nil slab and people 80 and above get ₹5 lakh. The new regime uses the same slabs for everyone.
Is my salary data uploaded?
No. The calculator runs in your browser. Nothing you type leaves your device.
Why is my TDS different from this?
Your employer may use a different estimate of yearly salary, or count proofs differently. Other income, arrears and a mid-year job change also change TDS. The return is where the final tax is settled.
